[Copy of mail to Clerk of Select Committee]

Dear Colleague(s)

I just checked a mailout from Statsusernet  to the  National Well-being list, subject "Environmental Audit Committee launches inquiry on Well-being."

I have submitted much evidence to the ONS National Well-Being team in the past, but you may wish to look at the material on my website under Subjective Social Indicators.  This includes the pioneering work I did with the late Dr Mark Abrams from 1971 to 1975 on developing survey-based measures of Quality of Life in Britain.

This work is rarely cited and is not mentioned at all in academic work commissioned by ONS.  The most accessible general report is my article Subjective measures of quality of life in Britain 1971 to 1975: Some developments and trends in Thompson E [Ed], Social Trends 7 (HMSO, 1976) but there is much more on my page Publications (for SSRC Survey Unit Quality of Life in Britain Surveys).  See also:

Transcript of contribution from floor by John F Hall to Statistics Users Council
Conference on Quality of Life Indicators (
1987)

Letter from John Hall to Dr John Cunningham MP, Shadow Secretary of State (Environment) in 1988, responding to a report that Dr Cunningham was to be put in charge of co-ordinating the Shadow Cabinet's attack on  quality of life issues and offering assistance from Dr Mark Abrams and himself.  Answer came there none.

After more than 40 years it's good to see our work at last being taken seriously.

Sincerely

John Hall
