The Statistics User Forum (SUF), supported by the Office for National Statistics, aims to be the strategic voice of users of official statistics. The Forum acts as an umbrella organisation for user groups, each of which covers a particular area across the spectrum of official statistics. Through the Forum we enable open and constructive dialogue between users and producers of official statistics and encourage communication across the user community.

    Dear SUF members,

A reminder to all that the deadline for submission of entries for the Campion award for excellence in official statistics is the end of March, just a few days to go. Whether you are a user or a producer of examples of excellence in official statistics, please consider making a nomination and recognise the great work being carried out across Government.

The award is for anyone working in UK government statistics and rewards good practice, focusing on statistics for the public good. We are looking for examples of excellent presentation of official statistics and examples of innovative statistical practices that have improved statistical information for users.

The award has been renamed this year in honour of Sir Harry Campion, who was the first director of the Central Statistical Office - the forerunner of the Office for National Statistics. Campion was also the inaugural director of the United Nations Statistical Office and the Royal Statistical Society's President from 1957 to 1959.

We are pleased to announce that Civil Service World is the media partner for the 2018 award.

Particular attention will be paid this year to citations from users that show how the relevant statistical output has helped to make a decision, inform a debate or bust a myth.

Whilst we often focus on the negative when looking at official statistics, this is now the time to focus on the positive and commend those in government who have worked effectively with the user in mind. Can I therefore encourage all user groups to think about a piece of work or project which you feel has significantly improved user engagement? To nominate a piece of work, all you need to do is fill in a simple entry form – which can be found here on the RSS website. The deadline for entries is 31 March 2018.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to get in touch.

    Best wishes,

    Dev Virdee

Chair of the Award organising committee
