Could I please ask ONS again to publish time series for the components of RPIJ in the same way as it does for the RPI.  Even fairly short series would be useful.

Dear Gareth

RPIJ is currently only produced as a headline series so we are not able to produce and publish the constituent series at present. We will be considering the range of indices that we publish in light of the findings of the Johnson review.

Kind Regards

Richard

Regarding on-line publication of price indices, I would like to see ONS publish the maximum - i.e. anything which it has in-house, experimentally or otherwise, so that others can participate in the evaluation of the relevant statistics.

Even if the requested information is not currently available in-house I think it should be produced and published so that others can research matters which ONS either does not have the resources or the will to do.

This is something that we already do as part of our quarterly publication of consumer price inflation micro data. You can access the information here (http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/guide-method/user-guidance/prices/cpi-and-rpi/cpi-and-rpi-item-indices-and-price-quotes/index.html).

If you, or any others are interested in using these data I suggest taking a look at the accompanying glossary and our technical manual (http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/cpi/consumer-price-indices---technical-manual/2014/index.html) as first steps.

This forum isn't the best place to answer detailed technical questions on these data - they should be directed to cpi@ons.gsi.gov.uk .

While this microdata publication is useful, there are relatively few people with the computing facilities and knowhow to work with it.

The weighting and classification frameworks and the technical manual are very useful.

However what I had in mind was the online publication of intermediate aggregates which could be manipulated by anybody with spreadsheet facilities.

I have already mentioned the components of RPIJ (and the same applies to CPIH).  Others have mentioned experimental series using the Net Acquisitions method for OOH costs.  It seems that this information may be being provided to Eurostat without any EU regulation requirement but is not available to the UK public.

It may be possible for the public to obtain such intermediate aggregates through Freedom of Information requests, but it would be in everyone's interests if ONS simply published the material.

Our intention is to publish our OOH net acquisitions estimates once we start supplying them to Eurostat later in the year. You may recall that we did publish previous estimates of OOH(NA) as part of the OOH consultation in 2012 (Additional data for the owner occupiers' housing costs consultation). We currently publish detailed indices for CPIH as part of our regular consumer price inflation release.
