Statistics User Forum

The Statistics User Forum (SUF), supported by the Office for National Statistics, aims to be the strategic voice of users of official statistics. The Forum acts as an umbrella organisation for user groups, each of which covers a particular area across the spectrum of official statistics. Through the Forum we enable open and constructive dialogue between users and producers of official statistics and encourage communication across the user community.

1.  Happy New Year!

To all SUF members, I hope you had an enjoyable festive holiday time.

Having enjoyed the TV adaptation of Howards End last Autumn, I am now reading EM Forster's novel. At one point he comments "Actual life is full of false clues and sign-posts that lead nowhere". That came to mind as I wanted to tell you about progress with the appointment of a Director of Policy and Communications in ONS, who should be taking forward a strategy for user engagement across the GSS. I am afraid all I can report is that I understand that the new Director will be in place by the time of the next SUF meeting (which is on Thursday 15th March, at the RSS) and that Danny will endeavour to get them along.

There is also little progress in putting in place an email circulation list that we can all use. Steve is still looking into this! Meanwhile, I trust that messages like this sent out through StatsUserNet are reaching everyone.

Better news is that I am getting good responses from organisations who might join SUF. I mentioned some meetings back that, like the US version of SUF, I would like to involve organisations who are users of a wide range of official statistics, to complement input from the more topic-based user groups. I am pleased to tell you that the CBI is now on board, and we welcome Anna Leach, head of economic intelligence at the CBI, to SUF. Other organisations should follow (and of course we already have several around the table, such as the Society of Professional Economists, as the Society of Business Economists has now become). Do let me know if you have any suggestions for other organisations who might be seen as (in the US jargon) professional users of official statistics.

Looking forward to working with you over the coming year.
Best wishes for 2018,
Paul

Dear SUF members

With apologies that I didn't get the information to Paul in time for his New Year's message, I can share more information about the new ONS Director of Policy and Communications. The appointee is Owen Brace, who joins us from a senior post in the Communications team at the Department for Work and Pensions. He should be joining us on 26 February.

Regards

Danny
