"Comparing Official Statistics Across the UK"
The National Statistician's Office has recently arranged the publication of GSS Guidance on 'Comparing Official Statistics Across the UK’, which is attached. This guidance, for producers of official statistics, explains how to use a standard and straightforward way of assessing comparability of their statistics with other parts of the UK. It also allows users to better understand what is comparable so that they can quickly get to the numbers they want.
The development of this guidance included assessing the comparability of some existing statistics in order to make it easier for users to find this information. The guidance only deals with steps producers can take to improve comparability. It does not cover ways of maximising comparability as new statistics are developed.
All official or national statistics published on a sub-UK basis can be subject to a comparability assessment irrespective of whether the topic of those statistics is devolved.
Feedback on the guidance can be sent to the National Statistician's Office at firstname.lastname@example.org. Feedback and questions on any particular statistical outputs should be addressed to the relevant producers, and can also be routed through the National Statistician’s Office.
