Crime Survey for England and Wales user event

When:  Jan 24, 2019 from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM (GMT)

For the attention of users of the Crime Survey for England and Wales

As you may be aware, the ONS have been making improvements to the treatment of high-frequency repeat victimisation in the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). In cases where high levels of repeat victimisation have been recorded on the CSEW the survey has always only included the first five incidents of a series within published estimates. In 2015, following criticism of this methodology, we commissioned an independent review of the methods for addressing high-frequency repeat victimisation, launched a public consultation and published our findings. As a result of this work, it was decided that we would drop the current cap of five and move to the 98th percentile as the agreed cut-off point for repeat victimisation.

We have been making these methodological changes and revising the entire series back to 1981 and will be publishing these data in January 2019 alongside our Crime in England and Wales release.

To coincide with the release of these data we will be holding a CSEW User Event on Thursday 24th January 2019, 13.30-16.00, at Regus London Victoria Greycoat Place, 10 Greycoat Place, SW1P 1SB

At the event we will:

  • Provide detail of the new methodology and other changes that users need to be aware of
  • Present the revised CSEW estimates
  • Outline our plans for making the revised CSEW datasets available for users
  • Hold a panel session to allow attendees to ask questions about the new methodology
