Official UK statistics website introduces new theme pages

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is continuing work to improve its website, and has recently enhanced the search function and created new interactive theme pages for:

 - the economy
<http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/taxonomy/index.html?nscl=Economy>
 - labour market
<http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/taxonomy/index.html?nscl=Labour+Market>
 - population
<http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/taxonomy/index.html?nscl=Population>.

They pull together a variety of sources and use engaging new formats, such as video, podcasts and infographics, to make the topics easier to explore and increase their appeal to the general interest user.

The infographics have met with a positive response and are already being used to bring statistics to life for young people and students. A teacher commented 'Love the graphic! I am teaching unemployment this week so will definitely be using it. We are big supporters of these graphics not just because they appeal to visual learners but every graphic has at least three or four important economic stories behind it!'

The remaining theme pages will be rolled out during spring and early summer. You can see how this work is progressing at www.ons.gov.uk

If you have any suggestions or comments about the new developments, ONS is keen to hear them. Please get in touch by emailing web.comments@ons.gsi.gov.uk

The Health and Social Care theme page is planned to be rolled out by early April. The page is currently there with some relevant information on it. http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/taxonomy/index.html?nscl=Health+and+Social+Care. But once it is launched as a theme page proper, it will have some items that will be updated monthly but other items will be updated more frequently. One item each month will relate to cancer statistics combining previously published data and linking it to the current cancer awareness month. As stated above, this page will pull together a variety of sources and use new formats, including infographics. Please visit this page once it is up and running and send comments, telling us what you like and making suggestions for anything we could do better.
