That's some useful links from Sarah, which coupled with the previous posts, illustrates just how wide ranging 'data presentation is'. I doubt David McCandless uses BS7581 in the pursuit of making his data beautiful... Over a coffee, you might want to read one of the several critiques by Stephen Few of McCandless' work which has sparked alot of debate in the visualisation community: http://www.perceptualedge.com/blog/?p=935 Which side of the fence you straddle/sit might well inform where you go looking for training... Meic mentioned the Stephen Few workshops which he runs occasionally in London and he does different days focussing on basic principles, designing dashboards etc. They work very well if they cover your own data presentation challenges. I would certainly regard them as good 'safety first' courses. I've yet to see a copy of Sally Bigwood's book, I look forward to getting hold of a copy. Another recent publication which is of real interest is 'The Functional Art' by Alberto Cairo, which somehow manages to neatly cover a wide part of the visualisation spectrum. Alan

Hi
Can you tell me, do these courses teach you the British Standard 7581 on presenting Performance Indicators Effectively? If anybody is looking for courses, I attended The Presenting Performance Indicators Effectively course run by CIPFA it's very interesting and is easy to see when looking at nationally available data whether analysts work to this standard. She was hired by the NHS on the Island to come and deliver the course to a group of us rather than running courses in one specific location. The lady that teaches the course is called Sally Bigwood and she does have a book which is now out of print but you may be able to get from a library or similar source: Presenting Numbers, Tables and Charts, by Sally Bigwood, Melissa Spore & John Seely, Published: 01/01/1970, Format: Paperback
It would also be interesting to know if others have heard of this standard and use it as a guide. Sarah Turtle Public Health Isle of Wight

I can certainly recommend Ed Swires-Hennessy's course. Practical, almost guaranteed to improve practice, and without the fundamentalist fanaticism you sometimes encounter. He covers presentation of numbers in reports and tables as well as graphic display. You can see a 45 minute video of ES_H on Statistics and how to interpret them at www.viddler.com/v/995409ed
An American guru in this area, Stephen Few, runs courses and sometime visits the UK. He's running a 3-day Visual Business Intelligence Workshop in London 18-20 February http://www.perceptualedge.com/workshops.php
I have some teaching material I've written to help public health trainees get the habit of good statistical presentation (based on Excel, but the principles apply whatever tool you use). You (and anybody else reading this) are welcome to share that if you wish.
I'd say beware of the Guardian's "master class". I've not been to it, but the Guardian seems to make heavy use of David McCandless, whose work inclines stongly towards the eye-catching and beautiful, but in the process all too often distorts and misrepresents the data it purports to display. See Stephen Few's blog passim for informed vituperation about DMcC's approach.
Hope this helps

Ben
There are several options out there.
My team provide an occasional introductory one-day course to GSS members (next ones are scheduled for northern GSS group in Leeds on 13th and 14th Februrary)
Then, there's the Presenting Data courses at the RSS organised by Ed Swires-Hennesey - check the RSS website for latest dates.
Finally, away from the world of official stats, there are other suppliers, like Andy Kirk who runs VisualisingData.com. The Guardian and Civil Service college courses have also got plenty of admirers.

Dear all,
I was wondering if anyone is aware of any good courses that focus on improving oral and/or visual presentation of statistics?
The Guardian offers a 'data visualisation master class' (http://bit.ly/WkMiCM) & an organisation called the Civil Service College offers something similar (http://bit.ly/XiA188) - does anyone have any experience of either of these?
I aware this question isn't strictly limited to health statistics so please feel free to point me to a more appropriate forum if necessary
Kind Regards Ben
